nono.. i dun mean to suan anyone but i just feel that there is much more to life than just trying to grab freebies, win contests. Of course i do enjoy the occasional freebie (if its on the way why not) and winning contests (love the thrill) but to be totally obsessed with it like some people is a bit too much.. For those so into useless freebies like bernard who admit that he doesn't have a use for all of them, whats the point of wasting time queueing for them.. For people into joining contests, if you spend the time and effort to participate and if you are skillful enough to win, i definitely do not see anything wrong. But of course you have to balance your life in whatever you do, e.g wats the point in trying to win everything

.....ya saw him (Bernard) many times with a few of his "ka-kees" queueing up for the NETs contest and many times in Suntec for freebies....so out of curiosity, I ask one of them why always see them queueing for freebies. So their answers are some for interest, some they will sell away for $$.

I agree with anonymous, life isn't just about the end result, sometimes the process is even more meaningful than the result.

Anyway, since I do not know who the moustache guy is, I shall not comment on him....but what I can say is that as long as the gift is meaninggul/useful to oneself, its alright to go and sign up. Well, of course I personally would love to cngratulate all winners of all prizes, but if the prize is a whole year of sanitary napkins by 'K', 'W' or 'L' and should that moustache guy won, I would have totally despise him man.....

UNLESS.....he has a gf, wife or a not-yet menopause mother lah =P.....

Just like you cannot earn all the money in the world, you cannot possibly get all the freebies or win all the contests one.. so just relax and enjoy life bernard!

Hey Anon 12:01,

I couldn't agree more with you! (Except the parts about Mr B because I don't know him :)

Well said!

Has anyone ever noticed that besides Bernard, there is a regular group of hardcore freeloaders whom you will ALWAYS see at almost every Courts/Audiohouse/Harvey Norman/S'pore Expo/IMM/Gain City, and whatever-else-is-advertised-in-the-newspapers $1 deals or freebie giveaways or FREE onsite-lucky draws?

These hardcore group of people will always be there. They are:

- Bernard, the famous bespectacled small skinny man with the mostache who always appear wearing a cap, backpack, T-shirt, and bermudas and sports shoes(obviuosly, this guy earns the reputation for being the most prolific, I heard that he is already blacklisted and kenna marked by many stage MCs and show hosts). This guy NEVER changes his outfit, it is ALWAYS the same. It is interesting that he once won a car in the Straits Times classifieds draw. But what is even more interesting is that he claims that he is a IT consultant but he looks more like an unemployed man to the trained eye. There is no IT consultant in this world who is so free that he can ride his bicycle all over Singapore to queue for almost every single advertised freebie/draw/deal. I have personally seen him riding his bicycle around Singapore even in the middle of a working day a couple of times. I believe this guy is unemployed and living off his parents. I have also heard from regular queue-ers that this Bernard is also a hardcore radio contest call-in participant who always manage to call in successfully. That is how professional this guy is. He lives and breathes lucky draw and freebies 24/7. I truly believe this Bernard is unemployed.

- Another regular is a very fat and big-sized bespectacled short-haired woman with her BIG-SIZED and tall son. This pair is really hardcore. If they participate in any queue, they will usually be at the first two positions. They alwasy aim to be the first in the queue. Unlike those uneducated Hokkien-speaking aunties, this woamn and her son are English-educated and can speak English well.

- Then there is another group of aunties, this group is the worst. They are so hardcore that they have each other's handphone numbers stored in their handphone's phonebook, can you believe it?! It's true! How do you spot this group of hardcore aunties? Very simple - they will ALWAYS drag a trolley with them to every queue. Why do I say this group is the worst? Hear this incident - do you still remember recently Harvey Norman celebrated their 8th anniversary at the atrium of Millenia Walk? Remember that?...it was during the APEC meeting. This group of aunties were so shameless and despicable that they even asked Harvey Norman customers at Millenia Walk to give them the high-value purchase receipts so that they can participate in the lucky draws! Without spending a single cent themselves! Many of them won big prizes on the spot, over and over and over again. How cunning is that you tell me?! And the best part is...those things they won they intended to sell away for money. I don't know what to say...

- Another hardcore freeloader is a Hokkien-speaking fat aunty with her twenty-something-looking son, who is quite big-sized. This fat woman will usually bring her old and frail old woman mother along. Alot of you may know who I am referring to. The twenty-something-looking son cannot get along with another chinese-speaking hardcore regular aunty, bespectacled with greasy-looking hair. These two people hate each other to the core, probably due to a previous clash at another queue in the past. Since then, whenever they see each other at any other venue they will start their nonsense all over again. The last time I saw these two quarrelling was at the Orchard road on-the-spot lucky draw outside Wisma(where there was a lucky draw with prizes such as watches, LCD TV etc.) where they were shouting at each other so violently that the organsiers had to send guys to keep them apart. This kind of hardcore regulars are a disgrace to Singapore and throw all of our faces. Very ugly.

Let me know if you want me to write more.

super detailed sia. Also you pointed out quite a bit of drama in these contest junkies...

For you to notice so much, I think our reader "Singaporean" also belongs to one of these hardcore losers category.. lol :-)

Could you be one of those who always lose to them and thus come here to complain?

Singaporean said...

To 'Contest Junkie' and 'Dallas', yes - your startled reactions like 'WOW' and 'O.M.G' to the reavealing insider information that I exposed is warranted.

Even to me, witnessing such hardcore kiasu acts just to win contests and get freebies, also never fails to amaze ME at times! It seems just so unbelievable, the extent to which these hardcore group of freeloaders, led by Bernard, will go to to, to make sure they take advantage of every advertised freebie/$1 deals/offers/contests/radio call-ins, etc. Did you know that Bernard carries envelopes and postage stamps and scissors inside his backpack? I'm serious! THAT'S the extent to which really shows just how professional he really is as a hardcore member of this group. I do not think that there is anyone in Singapore who will even go to that extent.

Also, did you know that the expose of these group of hardcore freeloaders has never been analysed or published by the press before? I'm serious. Even The Straits Times or New Paper has NEVER done a detailed expose of this hardcore group like what I have shared so intimately here. The write-up that Straits Times did on the Contest Junkie blog owner is not even scratching the surface of this hardcore group of people in Singapore. Those people that Straits Times managed to interview are NOT the real hardcore ones. I know who are the real hardcore ones, and alot of them belong to the trolley-trotting group of aunties. I'm serious. If ever there was a war in Singapore and rationing of food is implemented to prevent chaos, these group will find means and loopholes to get more than their fair share, I'm very sure of that. That's how professional this group of people are - they treat this almost like a game of life and death. I'm not exaggerating, I'm serious. You should see the look on their faces when the events are just about to start, they treat it very seriously, I'm not joking. TI have been studying the behaviour of this group of people for a very long time, much like an anthropologist studies a subject academically.

Oh yah...forgot to add...by the way, in my next post when I have the time to write more, I will be revealing shocking info about another group of hardcore freeloaders - those who always take part in online games/contests and somehow ALWAYS manage to win with the highest points. Unbelievable right? Have you always wondered how they managed to get so many points? It can't be that they sit infront of the computer and continously click on the online game 24 hours a day right? Remember the Singapore Air Force website contest last time when they gave away alot of freebies like mugs, model paper RSAF planes and iPOD speakers, T-shirt, etc? Yes, that one where they asked you to go down to Holland Village area to collect prize? Remember that? Quite long ago, that one. I will expose more about the secrets of how those hardcore online winners managed to get highest points in online games/contests in my next comment post when I have the time. You will be shocked when you hear the exposed truth revealed by me.

Are they the Mafia or something? LOL!

Anyways, it is interesting to see how these contest junkies go all out to win. And I'll be waiting for the next post about the online contest (oh, that's my favourite)...

Wah Singaporean, for you to know so much and in such intimate details, can I say you probably have gone for quite a few of these Courts/Audiohouse/Harvey Norman/S'pore Expo/IMM/Gain City, and whatever-else-is-advertised-in-the-newspapers $1 deals or freebie giveaways or FREE onsite-lucky draws yourself?

You are making me so curious about these hardcore contest junkies that I feel like going to one of those events to see who are these people that you are talking about ;pp

Indeed, the write up on ST is hardly an indepth look into things. Likely because those interviewed (like Dallas and me) are not aware of such ongoings or others who know are not saying it? Ha

TNP had asked: Are you embarrassed to be a contest junkie?

My reply: "Do you think I should be?"

And The Straits Times had asked: What do friends and family think of your love for contests? Do they say you're kiasu?

Me reply: "Even if they think so, they will be too polite to say it. Haha.

If anything, I think they think my love for contests is more bo liao than kiasu.

Ok. In proper English. I think some of them view my participation in all these contests as having nothing better to do or too much time on hand. They probably think I might be better off spending my time doing other things that are more constructive or fufilling."

With questions like that, maybe the journalists do know about ugly behaviours of contest particpants and is probably wondering if we do that kind of things. Haha

Well, if I am asked such questions again next time, I'll probably be saying something else.

Hi, contest junk, your sharing is also very valuable and does provide additional insights about this phenomenon. I guess the press does know about such things, but like you rightly pointed out, they lack in-depth knowledge about these group of people and their inner world. Well...you see, the reason why I know so much about this group of people is because I have been studying them for many years. The world of these hardcore freeloaders(I wouldn't use the term 'contest junkie' to describe them because it is too mild to a term to accurately describe this hardcore group).

'dallas', in your reaction to my last comment, you asked, "Are they the Mafia or something? LOL!", you have no idea just how much closer to the truth you have come with that reaction :-) You will be surprised. Your mention of the word 'Mafia' reminds me of a very horrendous incident in the history of freebie events in Singapore. Why do I say it is the most horrendous? It was so terribly barbaric in terms of just how far these people will go to, that no person that I relate this incident to, will ever believe that it happened right here in Singapore. Blood was shed.

Those people who were there on that fateful day will forever remember that shocking day. Since 'dallas' jolted my memory with the word 'Mafia', I shall share the real-life incident here with everyone.

Has anyone ever wondered if the kind of Haiti earthquake aftermath looting and ration-snatching will ever happen in Singapore?

Before I relate this shocking incident here, does anyone still remember Giant supermarket once ever gave away a FREE 14 inch colour TV set at the grand opening of their Marina Square outlet? Can anyone help me to estimate how many years ago was that event? Four years ago? Three years ago? Anyone still remember that? Giant has since closed down the Marina Square supermarket, but those who were there on that fateful day will NEVER forget the horror that they witnessed.

They tore the shop shutters and broke into the supermarket BY FORCE. I am not making this up. The people who were pushed against the broken store shutters were badly cut and bleeding. Blood was dripping everywhere. I am serious as I'm relating this. The Singapore Police Force was called in. If any reporter is reading this, you can verify this with the HQ of Cold Storage Singapore, the parent company of Giant Supermarket. I believe they still have management records of that incident and what transpired that day during the grand opening at Marina Square, although they may water-down the incident to preserve their image and public image.

Looking back, rationality went out the window that morning. It was seriously the ugliest day in our country's entire history of giving away freebies. The Singapore Police Force was called in. I am not making this up. On that fateful day, the line between civility and barbarism was blurred. To say that I was shocked by what I witnessed is an understatement.

Those of you who were there that day will know that the person(or persons) who incited the crowd was a man(or a few). The high emotions and tensions were galvanised when the rest of the hardcore group at the front(as usual) bolstered his/their guts when they too joined in the heckling and shouting at the Giant management staff during the standoff.

Anyone still remember this incident?

the article published about you is fantastic. It's a great acknowledgement and frankly after 2000 blog post written you deserve every word of it.

I'm an honest follower and I wish you even greater future success with this blog. It's a fun place to visit every time.

I write a lot in the topic of LUCK and research lucky people on a daily basis, so being able to follow a little community of "contest junkies" is a very interesting thing for me:)

What if we collected all the lucky people all over the globe? Where would you get started with a project like that?
